This part of our story started when Slim came by to
check our little babies, the Kokanee fry. He told Mr. Devuono that
the fish were ready face their fears and meet the dangerous world.
Our teacher told us the good news - we were going to Summit Creek to
release our little fish. Wow, were we ever excited! |
|
Then, one cool, cloudy, just-right day in April, we
rode the bus to Summit Creek Park and walked down the path to the
creek, packing the fry in a cooler with us. Our teacher scooped some
fry into cups and gave one to each of us. We held the cup in the
water for a little while so that the temperatures could equalize. We
tipped the cup, allowing the little fry to swim out on their own. We
watched them swim away, thinking about how brave they were. |

We
knew they would be facing many dangers in the next few months. Bigger
fish, birds such as blue herons and osprey, otters and beavers all
enjoy Kokanee fry as a daily snack. Sometimes people can also be
dangerous, by disturbing the fry or their habitat. |

|
We hope the fry we helped to raise
will grow to be strong adults and survive to be productive spawners. |
