The Greek Warship

By Robert & Sam

Our model is based after the Trireme (Tri-Ree-M) Warship. This ship was the naval ship of choice for the ancient Greek Empire. This “state of the art” warship was designed to cover long distances quickly under oar and sail. It also had the ability ram enemy ships with tremendous power. Although our model is smaller it will show most of the key elements of the actual ship. Listed below are common characteristics that will give you an idea as to what the actual ship looked like

Overall length: 37 meters

Overall beam: 5.5 meters

170 oarsmen in 3 files on each side: top file 31, middle and bottom 27 each

One man per oar

Oar length: 4.2m and 4.0m Short oars at ends of the ship

Speed: able to cover 184 sea miles at about 7.5 knots without stopping

In closing, I hope this report gives you the idea of the awesome, raw, untamed power of the Greek Trireme and will inspire you to do more research on the ancient Greek Empire.
