Phoenician Merchant Ship

Lee and Mac

Phoenician cultures  traded through the use of Phoenician Merchant ships.  The other ships Phoenicians made were war ships. This articles is about Phoenician Merchant ships.

Some of the goods the Phoenicians traded were perfume, spices, tin, bronze, ivory, gold, the skin of elephants, lions, leopards.

From Greek writers we have learned that Phoenician vessels were mostly these two kinds of ship, Merchant ships and War-vessels. The merchant ship was a round hulled ship. They were pushed by oars or sails, but depended mostly on the sail. .  The sail was held up by ropes, 2 on each corner and the sailors watched them closely because it would be dangerous to leave them unattended.  As long as the wind blew they used the sail, if the wind stopped blowing the sailors would bring down the sail and row.

The archaeologists  believe there were small boats on them, which assured some safety, and helped them get the cargo on shore. If there were small boats we don't know where they would be held on the ship.

They mainly traded in the merchant ships, like the one we built.
