I am
now cured of my illness. When I woke up, I realized that I was dirty
and it felt as though I had been sleeping in my clothes.
I returned for
another visit to Zachariah, but this time it was so that I could give
the dirk back to him. He talked me into keeping the dirk and I also
heard this horrifying story about Captain Jaggery.
Zachariah told
me of how Captain Jaggery had beaten a man to such an extent that his
arm needed to be amputated. At first this story horrified me, I felt
betrayed. How could such a kind, considerate man such as the Captain
be the monster Zachariah made him out to be. But then I thought to
myself, he doesn't like the Captain. How do I know that he's not
making it up for revenge, trying to get me to turn against him?
After a few
moments I decided to ignore Zachariah's warnings for no reason other
than I thought of him as an old black man who didn't respect his
betters. I left in a hurry, for I felt that after that I needed to get
away from him. I felt unsure of what I had decided to believe.
When I left and returned to my room, I was very confused, but before I
could put any serious thought into it, Mr. Hollybrass came and told me
that Captain Jaggery would like me to join him for tea.
